TALKING TREES

New technologies for monitoring trees in cities

Urban greenery is a key component in counteracting the effects of climate change in cities. In particular, trees, in addition to sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere, slow down rainwater runoff, filter particulate matter from the air and counteract the heat islands that increasingly affect our cities. It is therefore particularly important to properly monitor and manage urban green infrastructure to maximize the ecosystem services provided by plants.

The Talking Trees project studies sensors placed on trees to find a way to improve the monitoring of urban green areas, calculate the benefit they provide to the territory, monitor safety and optimise management. In particular two types of sensors are being tested to provide continuous information on fundamental aspects of the plants and their vitality: the TreeTalker sensor and the Treesense sensor. We expect that the sensors will also help to calibrate algorithms for calculating the benefits of urban greenery using soil and foliage data as well.
